Silent conversation | 150 X 60 X 40 cm | 2020
As we wrap ourselves in masks and other props, social distancing is amplifying the sense of loneliness, and the impairment of interpersonal communication. The conversation is beyond the mask, expressionless and body language, and the conversation becomes distant; silent communication.
The objects stand together but each one is alone. Unidentified and unidentified, but at the same time there is a sense of identification that gives support and strength.
The work was created during the quarantine period, while a combination of frustration and stoic serenity accompany the process; Feeling of global intimacy and solidarity, in hope that it is a temporary situation, and at the same time there is fear and worry about the uncertainty and the unknown future. It is creates suspicion and social isolation. A metaphor for our personal and human existence.
We dived into a whirlpool of senses. Fear, confusion, suspicion, isolation distance, a world without contact, are troubled when life seems to be out of our control, the known is no longer familiar, and a unknown becomes familiar.
The artwork examines whether extreme situations also have limits, and to what extent the situation can further exacerbate ... "The new normal" is everything that is perceived as extreme, and unfamiliar, can become "normal" tomorrow, and everything that was unfounded yesterday is completely normal in our eyes today.
The work made by recycled paper, (the connection between past and present), working on the object shell, (so that the work is hollow). In layers of paper tears, forming coarse textures. The ability of creasing and tearing gives the paper a fragile and powerful look. In its final state it is difficult and present.
The decision to leave the paper in its natural color actually dulls the paper's initial purpose of "absorbing" everything and being a reactive background, thus presenting its material truth.
The work was inspired by the nuns during the Spanish flu (1918), when they wore masks in the connotation of a bird's beak.
